The Scarlet Letter, a novel published in 1850 set between the years 1642-1649 is brought to the stage, or more accurately to Pioneer Village by History Alive Inc. Hester Prynne conceived a daughter through an affair, and she is branded as an adulteress. The town wants to know who the father is and how she could commit such acts of adultery and sin. Hester throughout the story struggles to keep her dignity in tact, as well as struggles to keep the identity of the father a secret; despite this, she is encouraged and strengthened by her energetic daughter, Pearl. Hester’s determination to provide her little family the best life possible, along with the reminders of how she got to where she was, moves Hester throughout her journey. Guided by Nathaniel Hawthorne as the narrator, History Alive Inc’s presentation highlights the story’s themes of guilt, family, acceptance, forgiveness, and love.
